Jobs A Felon Can Get – Follow These Steps For Success.

I wanted to take a look at some more options for jobs a felon can get and other things you can do that will help towards obtaining a great job even though you have a previous conviction.

First thing first if you’re looking to gain trust from future employers then consider doing some volunteer work. This not only allows you to show you’re willing to work but also enables you to connect with your local community. There is nothing more powerful than word of mouth and if someone recommends you that’s the best compliment you will get and one that an employer cannot ignore. People are always on the look out for possible employees and this means the range of jobs a felon can get will increase if you get to know people.

Another form of trust building that’s similar to volunteer work is getting in touch with your local church and saying hay I want to help, what can I do for you. Again it’s an important and positive connection with the people around you and let’s face it there truly isn’t any higher recommendations than one you can get from your local church. Be bold, be friendly and go out there and meet people, I guarantee it will open all sorts of doors for you.

Are you well educated, do you already have a skill, maybe you have several? You could teach Adult Education Classes depending on your own level of education of course. You may not think it but your skills and knowledge would be highly sort after and teaching is a great platform for you to share those skills.

There are always plenty of un-skilled and semi-skilled labour jobs to choose from. Now I know what you’re thinking, those types of jobs would be real low grade jobs a felon can get. Well just stop and think for a minute, sure these jobs are not the best in the world but don’t just think short term, always think long term. What I mean by that is start off with a basic labouring job, be a model honest employee and after your employer can see how committed you are that’s your chance to enquire about possible apprenticeships or other positions you might want to go for.

Also after you have obtained new skills you could then start your own business or become a contract worker for several different companies. This will allow you a lot more freedom and give you more control regarding your own career and work options. If you invest I little bit of time doing the "hard" work them that will pay you back big time when it comes to stepping up the ladder later on.

In my experience it’s always better to try and approach smaller companies rather than big corporations. The main reason for this is that smaller family run businesses are a lot easier to connect with and you’re able to speak directly with the owner/manager on a one to one basis. Trying to make contact with the boss of a large company is virtually impossible and if you have to go through several checks to get there I guarantee you want make it past the first stage. Again start small and build up slowly, when you have a good work history you can begin aiming your sites a lot higher.

Below is a list of companies that have a proven history of employing ex-felons.

AT & T

Apple Inc.

Canon USA

Career Education Group

American Express

Campbell Soup Company

Chase Bank

First Express

Exxon Mobil

Duracell

This list is by no means all the companies that have provided many jobs a felon can get, it’s just the tip of the ice berg. I will add to this list and provide more companies that you can consider in your search for work. The key to success truly is persistence don’t think for one second you won’t find a job because with hard work and due diligents the amount of jobs a felon can get is as broad as it is wide.

Very useful hub. It may not seem like a high priority initially, but reintegrating ex-cons is a very important process for any community. There were good suggestions that you outlined. For many of us, a job represents hope, and ex-cons need that too - especially so that they wouldn't turn or return to a life of crime.

Thanks for your input SpiffyD. I totally agree about reintegration into the local community this can be the first step towards ex felons feeling respected again which in turn gives them hope.

When I go for an interview and at the end when asked if I would like to add anything. I just simpley ask that they dont see me as a felon, see me as a valuable asset to their company. As you know it does not work. Most employers only see criminal and that is it. There is no law that says they cant hire you its just their choice.

Thanks for your input Lillie. It is extremely hard to change peoples perception of anyone who has a criminal background but its not impossible. I guess my approach is if they dont employ you then their missing out and its one step closer to getting employed by someone who will give you a go. There is no problem that cannot be solved and there is no better feeling than beating the odds.
